About Tessera
Tessera is a daily word puzzle. The letters are all on the board, just in the wrong places. Swap two tiles at a time until every row spells a word, in as few moves as you can. There is one puzzle a day, the same for everyone, so players can compare how many swaps they took.
Alongside the daily puzzle, Tessera Chain is a ladder of levels with up to three stars each for solving in fewer moves, broken up by bonus rounds against the clock. Players can make leagues with friends, climb daily leaderboards worldwide and in their country, and unlock 20 themes.

Press release
Tessera, the daily word puzzle where you swap letters instead of guessing them, launches on iPhone and Android
Made by one designer in Shropshire, with enough puzzles for 1,789 years
Tessera, a free daily word puzzle, is out now on the App Store and Google Play. Every letter starts on the board, in the wrong place. Players swap two tiles at a time until every row and every column spells a word, in as few swaps as they can.
Tessera started as a website in April 2026, and its players keep coming back: of the people who made an account, 87% were still solving a week after their first puzzle, and 74% three months later. The typical player with an account has solved on 54 different days.
Each puzzle is a grid built from 1,920 everyday words, with every row and column a real word. That word list can make 653,337 different grids, enough for a new puzzle every day for about 1,789 years. Wordle launched with 2,315 answers, about six years' worth, and began reusing them in February 2026.
“I wanted a daily puzzle where you can see every letter from the start, and the challenge is how cleanly you solve it,” said Paul Cooper, who designed and built Tessera on his own. “A lot of it was shaped by the people who played the early versions.”
Alongside the daily puzzle, the app adds Tessera Chain, a ladder of levels with stars and a bonus round every ten levels, plus leagues with friends, daily leaderboards, 20 themes and a Spanish edition. Tessera is free, with optional purchases, and shows no ads unless a player chooses to watch one for coins.
Retention covers players with an account, as of October 2026; “still solving” means a solve on or after that day.
